Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the marketplace, including reports published in Media Play News.
For instance, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that calendar week, and the manufacture reports sales of ane,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending approximate is based on the boilerplate sales cost for the championship in the retailers we survey.
We refine our estimates from week to calendar week as more data becomes bachelor. In particular, nosotros adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter one time the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles tin can go upwardly or down equally we update our estimates.
Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more than accurate for higher-selling titles.

Weekend predictions: Secrets of Dumbledore should country in the high 40s
April 15th, 2022
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore posted $6 one thousand thousand in preview earnings last night, a figure that'southward remarkably close to the $6.25 million Sonic the Hedgehog 2 made from previews last week. The 11th outing from the Harry Potter franchise is unlikely to come up close to Sonic's $72-million opening though, with our model expecting something in the high $xl-millions. More than...
International Round Up: Harry Potter Puts a Spell on China, Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide
August 20th, 2020
The ho-hum march to recovery at the box office continued in international markets at the weekend every bit theaters opened up and moviegoers connected to return. Progress is being slowed past the lack of new films, especially from US studios, simply itemize titles are filling the void. People's republic of china took advantage of an opportunity to release a movie from the Harry Potter archive for the offset fourth dimension in the territory, and Australian picture fans got a take a chance to savor some original Star Wars. Some local films are also doing well, partly thank you to the lack of contest.
Here'due south a round-upward of what'southward playing around the globe, and how markets are recovering. More...
Abode Market place Releases for March 12th, 2019
March 13th, 2019
It's not a good calendar week on the habitation market. There are some big releases, like Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, but none of them are good. At that place are a couple of contenders for Choice of the Week, but the The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends: The Complete Series DVD is a re-release at a more than reasonable cost, while it is worth waiting to go the The Miseducation of Cameron Mail service: Special Edition Blu-ray. In the end, I went with a late screener, The Forbidden Photos Of A Lady In a higher place Suspicion: Collector's Edition Blu-ray. It is definitely the all-time bet for fans of Giallo and / or Moving picture Noir. More...
Weekend Estimates: Ralph Slips, Still Strong, Hannah Tops Expectations, Nevertheless Soft
Dec 2nd, 2018
Ralph Breaks the Internet will retain top spot on the weekend box part chart with an estimated $25.8 1000000 for a 2-week full of $119.iii million. Granted, this is lower than nosotros predicted, but not and so much lower than anyone at Disney should be panicking. Internationally, the picture added an estimated $33.7 million in 27 markets, lifting its international total to $87.7 one thousand thousand afterwards two weeks of release. Its only major marketplace opening of the weekend was the U.M. where information technology reportedly earned $5.two meg. This is less than Wreck-It Ralph opened with, but that film debuted during the school holidays, and then it got a boost. Ralph Breaks the Net should have longer than average legs thanks to Christmas, but I don't think it will match its predecessor in this market place. More...
Weekend Wrap-Up: Ralph, Creed Lead Box Office, Break Records
November 27th, 2018
The weekend box role was more lucrative than predicted with both Ralph Breaks the Internet and Creed 2 breaking records. Depending on how technical you desire to be. Ralph Breaks the Internet led the way with $55.67 million over the iii-day weekend and $84.47 million over five. This is technically the tape for biggest Thanksgiving opening, as Frozen had a prestige opening the weekend before and only expanded wide on Thanksgiving. About every other film on this week's list also topped predictions helping this weekend to ascent 26% from last weekend hitting $216 1000000 over the three-twenty-four hour period period. This was also 15% college than the same weekend concluding year, which is a more important result. I was really expecting 2018'southward atomic number 82 over 2017 to be downwardly significantly from its height; nevertheless, instead information technology has stretched its lead to $one.04 billion or 11% at $x.53 billion to $9.49 billion. Daily Box Office: Ralph Slips, but is however Thankful
November 23rd, 2018
Yesterday was Thanksgiving and some studios were closed for the twenty-four hours, just we have a total list of box office numbers today. Ralph Breaks the Internet continued to lead the way at the box part with $10.3 million on Th for a two-day full of $28.8 million. The picture is still well above Coco and Moana's ii-day pace, but it fell 44% from its Wednesday debut, which is a sharper decline than either of those two films suffered. It is on footstep to dominate the five-day weekend with $85 million, which is below yesterday'southward pace and below Frozen's record-setting wide expansion, but I tin't imagine there are many people at Disney that are disappointed with this result. The picture's reviews and its A minus from CinemaScore, plus its family unit friendly target audience should help it last in theaters till the new year and it should be profitable enough that the studio will want to turn the franchise into a trilogy. Daily Box Office: Ralph is Breaking Record Books
November 22nd, 2018
It'south Thanksgiving long weekend, which means many studios are closed and are non reporting official numbers. However, one of the studios that is reporting numbers is Disney and they are reporting tape-breaking numbers. Ralph Breaks the Internet earned $xviii.5 1000000 on Wednesday, which is significantly more than either Coco or Moana managed the previous two years. In fact, this is more than Frozen managed during its record-breaking wide expansion back in 2013. This film'south reviews are nifty and it earned an A minus from CinemaScore, so it should take adept legs and could top Frozen's $93.59 one thousand thousand v-day opening. In fact, some studios retrieve it has a existent run a risk of $100 million during its five-day opening. I'm not that bullish, just even if information technology only earns $90 million over five-days, information technology will nonetheless be a monster hit and way more than than we predicted. More...
International Box Office: Grindelwald Has Quarter Billion Dollar Global Debut
Nov 20th, 2018
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald started its international run with $191.5 million on 50,865 screens in 79 markets for a worldwide debut of $253.7 million. Its largest opening was in China, but information technology had to settle for second place there with $36.68 million on 22,008 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $37.53 million. It had more impressive debuts in the U.K. ($16.3 meg on 1,823 screens) and in Russia ($12.36 one thousand thousand on 1,623). The film had the best opening in the Harry Potter franchise in 21 markets, just overall, it was only three% ahead of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in the same markets. Its much weaker reviews will likely lead to shorter legs, just even so, information technology should even so have no trouble getting to $600 million worldwide and becoming Warner Bros.' biggest hitting of the year. If the next installment in the franchise falls simply as much, then the studio will have reason to be concerned. More...
Weekend Wrap-Up: Grindelwald Debuts on Top, merely Pales Compared to Harry Potter
Nov 19th, 2018
Every bit expected, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald topped the weekend box office chart; still, information technology failed to see expectations by virtually x%. Additionally, neither Instant Family nor Widows matched expectations and this hurt the overall box office, which fell 2.9% from last weekend to $172 1000000. More chiefly, this is 14% lower than the same weekend concluding year. Year-to-date, 2018 has reached $10 billion and now has a running tally of $10.18 billion. This is eleven% or $i.01 billion ahead of last twelvemonth's footstep. More...
Thursday Night Previews: Grindelwald's Previews were Fantastic and Beastly
November 16th, 2018
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald earned $nine.1 meg during previews on Thursday, which is better than Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them managed. Granted, it was better past mere percentage points, equally that earlier film earned $8.75 million during its previews. Where it goes from hither is a bit of a mystery. On the one hand, its reviews are much worse than the previous installment's reviews were and it is a sequel. Both of those facts suggest shorter legs. Withal, the gap between Fantastic Beasts and the concluding original Harry Potter film may have resulted in a much more front-loaded run, so The Crimes of Grindelwald could benefit from that. As e'er, nosotros volition know improve this fourth dimension tomorrow when Friday estimates are out. More...
Weekend Prediction: Is Grindelwald Committing Crimes confronting the Harry Potter Franchise?
November 15th, 2018
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is the latest installment in the Harry Potter franchise, but sadly, its reviews are, by far, the worst in the franchise. It should all the same have no problem earning commencement place and volition very likely interruption even just on its international numbers, only this is still troubling for its future. The second biggest release of the week is Instant Family and its reviews are skilful, only not bang-up. They are certainly fine for a family unit comedy. Widows is the best-reviewed new release, but its buzz is quiet enough that it will barely finish in the height five. Meanwhile, A Private War is expanding nationwide and that could aid it earn a spot in the top x, but I wouldn't bet on it. This weekend last year, Justice League opened with $93.84 1000000, while Wonder debuted in second identify with $27.55 million. Add in The Star's $9.81 million opening and the three broad releases pulled in $130 million. There's no way the new releases this year will friction match that and 2018 will probable lose in the twelvemonth-over-twelvemonth comparing. More...
2018 Preview: Nov
Nov 1st, 2018
October connected 2018's phenomenal box office run, for the nearly part. There were a couple of films that missed expectations past $10 million or more, but on the other hand, Vemon and Halloween were smash hits and are now the first and second biggest October debuts of all time. Furthermore, 2018'south lead over 2017 is, as I'm writing this, just shy of $one billion and if 2018 tin can maintain this pb, it will exist i of the biggest year-over-year increases of all time. It won't. The fun times end now. Why is that? Last November was astonishing. There were only eight broad releases, simply half-dozen of them earned more than $100 1000000. Three of those hit $200 million, including Thor: Ragnarok, which earned over $300 million. This yr, there are a lot more movies opening in November, only information technology is a example of quantity over quality. No flick is expected to come close to $300 one thousand thousand and it would have a bit of luck only to have five $100 million hits. The pic I'm looking forrad to the most is Ralph Breaks the Internet, while it, Dr. Seuss' The Grinch, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald are all aiming for $200 million this month. Fortunately, even if 2018 is behind 2017's footstep by effectually $300 million, 2018 has built up such a large lead that information technology should all the same get into December with an insurmountable atomic number 82 at the box part. Featured Blu-ray and DVD Review: Mary and the Witch's Bloom
Apr 22nd, 2018
Mary and the Witch'due south Blossom is the latest release from GKIDS. GKIDS is the but distributor that can routinely release animated films in express release and accept them do well at the box role. For example, this moving picture earned over $two million domestically. The film doesn't come out on DVD or Blu-ray Philharmonic Pack until May the 1st, but the screener arrived early and I was able to get to the review this weekend. Is it worth waiting for? More...
Analysis: Why Haven't There Been Fifty Shades of Grey Copycats?
Feb 8th, 2018
This weekend the 50 Shades franchise is expected to surpass $1 billion in total worldwide box office with the release of the final installment, Fifty Shades Freed. All that income comes from films with an estimated combined upkeep for all three films of $150 one thousand thousand. The last time Hollywood saw this kind of success with an erotic drama/thriller, it created an entire subgenre that ate its style all through the 90s. Yet, subsequently this year, it seems Valentine's Day weekend will be left without a Fifty Shades replacement. So why the hesitancy from Hollywood to step up to the challenge this time?

Weekend Estimates: Coco Gives Disney Another Thanksgiving Win
November 26th, 2017
Coco will easily peak the box function chart this Thanksgiving weekend, with Disney projecting a $71 million 5-day opening, including $49 million from Friday to Sunday. That's the fourth-best Thanksgiving opening of all fourth dimension, behind Frozen ($94 1000000), Moana ($82 1000000), and Toy Story 2 ($80 one thousand thousand). In all, Disney lays claim to x of the top eleven opening weekend's over this holiday period, although, to be fair, the Hunger Games and Harry Potter franchises both claim several spots in the higher reaches of the Thanksgiving weekend record chart, but were just playing in their second weekend, rather than opening.
Nit-picking bated, information technology'southward a great weekend for Coco. More than...
Home Market Releases for November vii, 2017
November 8th, 2017
It is not a particularly potent week on the home market. Cars 3 is the biggest new release, but information technology is far from the best. In that location were non a lot of contenders for Pick of the Calendar week. The Philadelphia Story and Your Name were the two best with the latter coming out on top and its Blu-ray Combo Pack is the Pick of the Calendar week. More than...
Express and VOD Releases: Tragic Fate for Those who Miss these Films
October 20th, 2017
There isn't a huge pick of express releases this week, only there are several earning excellent reviews, such equally 120 Beats Per Minute, Jane, Tragedy Girls, and others. Additionally, films like The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Wonderstruck are earning simply expert reviews, simply have plenty buzz that they could nonetheless exercise well in theaters. More...
Theater Counts: Circle Plays in three,163 Locations; Guardians Coming to iv,200 Theaters Next Week
April 27th, 2017
April comes to stop with two broad releases that accept pocket-sized ambitions at the box office. The Circumvolve opens in 3,163 theaters for STX Entertainment, who will be happy if it beats The Bye Cheerio Human being's $13.5 million opening weekend and becomes their 2d-best opening to date (Bad Moms holds the record for the studio, with $23.viii meg—a number they would be thrilled with). Speaking of records, The Circle holds a very unusual 1… More than...
Domicile Market Releases for March 28th, 2017
March 29th, 2017
Information technology'due south a adept week for Pick of the Week contenders, equally there are seven such releases on this week's listing. Unfortunately, none of them really scream out as The Choice of the Week. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is by far the biggest, only information technology is simply out on Video on Demand right now, while Hidden Figures is the best, just once more, information technology is only on VOD this calendar week. In that location are also a couple of busted Oscar-bait films, Archer: Season Seven is only getting a DVD release, while the previous seasons came out on Blu-ray. In the end, I went with Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXXVIII, partially to celebrate the render of the show. More...
Weekend Estimates: Beauty and the Brute Sets New March Record
March 19th, 2017
Beauty and the Beast set out this weekend to show that it'south not but super heroes who tin evangelize large openings at the box office, and information technology'south doing so in some style. Disney is projecting a $170 million opening weekend for the alive action fairytale, and the moving-picture show is setting records around the world. At home, it'll have the biggest March weekend of all time, and the fourth-best Sat of all fourth dimension. The studio is projecting information technology will take the 6th-all-time Sunday in history, although my coin would exist on information technology slightly outperforming today, for the fifth-best Sunday, and that information technology will challenge Iron Human being three's $174 million for the 6th-best opening of all time. But Star Wars, super heroes, and dinosaur-themed movies have done better on opening weekend. More...
Weekend Wrap-Up: Moana Sails to Victory with $28.27 million
December 6th, 2016
As expected, Moana dominated the weekend box office chart with a $10 million lead over its nearest competitor earning $28.27 million. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them besides did well with $18.12 million. Unfortunately, those were the only two films to earn more than $10 million over the weekend and this left the overall box office down a massive 48% from last weekend to only $95 million. Worse still, this is 2.viii% lower than the same weekend last year. I'm actually surprised it'southward that close, because at that place were four films that earned more than $ten meg terminal year, including the biggest new release, Krampus. 2016 was able to crack $10 billion before the weekend and has a very substantial lead at $x.12 billion to $9.66 billion for 2015. Weekend Wrap-upward: Moana Takes on Beast Over Thanksgiving Weekend
November 29th, 2016
As expected, Moana earned starting time place over the Thanksgiving weekend and became the biggest true opener in the holiday's history. (Technically Frozen opened in limited release the week earlier and as we learned from Futurama, technically correct is the best kind of correct.) The moving-picture show was a trivial more front-loaded than expected and virtually matched our predictions. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them held on better than predicted and that ane-two punch helped the overall box office grow 17% from last weekend to $184 million, over the 3-day portion of the weekend. This is near identical to the same weekend last year; in fact, it was upwards by less than 1%. Year-to-engagement, 2016 has pulled in $9.99 billion. 2016 will shortly become the eighth year in a row to reach the $10 billion milestone. This is v.0% / $470 million higher up last year'south stride. I've been proverb for a while that we needed to enter Dec with a $300 one thousand thousand advantage over 2015 in club to come out alee at the end of the year, so this is corking news. More...
International Box Office: Fantastic has a Beast of an Opening with $143.three one thousand thousand
November 24th, 2016
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opened in first place on the international nautical chart with $143.3 million in 63 markets. The film had the biggest opening of the Harry Potter franchise in xvi of those 63 markets, simply ironically not in the U.M., where it had its biggest opening. The movie debuted in get-go identify in that location with $eighteen.ninety 1000000 in 666 theaters. This is the 3rd best in the franchise behind the two Deathly Hallows films. Some of the markets where Fantastic Beasts gear up the franchise tape include S Korea, where information technology made $10.64 million on 1,431 screens over the weekend for a full opening of $14.15 million. Weekend Predictions: Moana Takes on Beast Over Thanksgiving Weekend
November 23rd, 2016
Thanksgiving weekend is one of the nigh lucrative weekends of the year and this fourth dimension around we could have a relatively close boxing between a new release, Moana, and last calendar week'southward number ane motion-picture show, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. At least that's what analysts thought, before we saw the preview numbers. None of the residuum of the new wide releases are expected to practice much. Allied could become a midlevel striking, merely I would be surprised if its budget was only midlevel. Bad Santa 2 is on its way to condign another comedy sequel that bombs. If Rules Don't Utilise's previews are whatever indication, it will become ane of the worst box office performers of the year. This weekend concluding yr, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 beat out The Proficient Dinosaur rather hands. However, Fantastic Beasts started slower than Moana, so I think we will have a new winner this calendar week. More...
Weekend Wrap-Up: Fantastic Beast Tin't Lift Box Part
November 22nd, 2016
Equally expected, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them dominated the box office earning almost every bit much equally the rest of the films combined. Yet, it was unexpectedly weak earning just $74.40 million. In fact, every flick we talked about on Thursday'due south predictions underperformed and the overall box part was down to $158 million. Granted, "down" in this instance is simply off by 0.one%, only considering we were expecting meaning growth, even a little drop is distressing. Worse still, the box office is off by eight.ix% from this weekend last year. Once more, nosotros were expecting growth in the twelvemonth-over-twelvemonth comparison, so a drop this large really hurts. Year-to-engagement, 2016 has pulled in $9.49 billion, which is 5.9% or $540 million meliorate than final yr'south footstep. That said, I wouldn't panic, as Moana should assist the box function bounce dorsum this weekend. More...
Weekend Estimates: Fantastic Beasts Makes Fantastic-ish $75 Million
November 20th, 2016
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Discover Them is doing everything Warner Bros. could take wished for this weekend, posting a lively $75 million opening in the US, hitting $143.3 million internationally for a global opening over $200 one thousand thousand, and getting a A CinemaScore that should give information technology positive discussion of oral fissure going into Thanksgiving. For a franchise reboot, that's a lot of reasons to exist happy, although its opening is well below the openings enjoyed past the original Harry Potter franchise. The worst of those, Chamber of Secrets, opened with $88 one thousand thousand over three days (Order of the Phoenix and Half-Claret Prince both technically had slower weekends than Chamber of Secrets, but both of them opened on Wed, and they still did over $75 1000000 Friday–Sunday). Friday Estimates: Fantastic Dominates Charts, but with just $29.7 one thousand thousand
November 19th, 2016
Equally expected, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them easily earned first place on Fri. However, it only managed $29.vii million, which was well below expectations. This is the worst opening day in the Harry Potter franchise since The Bedroom of Secrets. (The two films are so shut that the concluding figure for Fantastic Beasts could be the worst in the franchise.) The reviews are weaker than the franchise as a whole, but its CinemaScore is an A and that's roughly boilerplate for the previous 8 Harry Potter films. The flick should withal earn between $70 million and $75 meg over the weekend, depending on if the loftier CinemaScore can overcome the Fanboy Upshot. I would choose to be optimistic, but that hasn't worked out this weekend. More...
Thursday Dark Previews: Fantastic Doesn't Quite Live Upwardly to Its Name with $eight.75 million - Updated
November 18th, 2016
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Observe Them pulled in $eight.75 million during its midnight shows last dark. That'due south expert, but a lilliputian lower than expected and non even the best of the fall then far. It was beaten by Doctor Strange, which earned $9.4 million merely two weeks ago. Worse still, Fantastic Beasts' reviews have fallen to 74% positive. That's nevertheless practiced for a blockbuster release, simply it is the everyman in the Harry Potter franchise and will likely hurt the moving picture's box function functioning over the weekend. It should still make over $80 million this weekend, but it will be close. Nosotros might accept to revise that prediction lower tomorrow when we have Friday's estimates. More...
Weekend Predictions: Volition Fantastic Be Fantastic? Or will it merely exist a Animal at the Box Part?
November 17th, 2016
At the showtime of the calendar month, we thought there would be four broad releases / expansions this week. Yet, it turns out there will be but one, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The lack of wide releases should help it at the box role and there is a small-scale chance it could peak $100 million over the next three days. While there are no other broad releases, in that location are a few films opening or expanding semi-broad. Of these, The Edge of Seventeen is the only one with a realistic shot at the peak five. Information technology is earning the best reviews of the week and did earn a lot of film festival fizz, so that should help. Billy Lynn'southward Long Halftime Walk had an amazing opening in express release last weekend, but it volition likely struggle as it expands into just over 1,000 theaters this weekend. Finally there'due south Bleed for This, which is expected to barely brand the peak ten. This weekend final year, the final installment of the Hunger Games franchise opened with only over $100 million. At that place's a slim take a chance Fantastic Beasts will do the aforementioned. Even if information technology doesn't, the depth this year is much ameliorate than last yr and that should help 2016 win in the yr-over-year comparison. More...
2016 Preview: Nov
November 1st, 2016
October turned out to be a mixed calendar month. On the one manus, non one movie earned $100 million, or even came shut. Notwithstanding, it was also a more than steady calendar month than last October and the last two weeks really helped 2016 in the year-over-year comparisons. In November, nosotros have five films with at least a shot at $100 1000000, 3 of which should have no trouble getting to at least $200 million. A trivial while ago, I thought Fantastic Beasts and Where to Observe Them would be the biggest hit of the month, but the buzz took a hit recently. More on that below. Meanwhile, Physician Strange'due south reviews are currently 90% positive and that should help it out at the box part. The third very likely $200 million hitting is Moana. There is certainly precedent for an blithe movie to exist a monster hit at this time of year, just at that place is also a lot of competition. Final Nov was similar in forcefulness, with five films that earned more than $100 one thousand thousand and two films that earned more than than $200 million. None earned more than than $300 million, so that'due south the goal for this November. If nosotros can go i $300 one thousand thousand and / or three $200 1000000 movies over the calendar month, then information technology volition exist seen equally a victory. More...
Dory Finds its mode to $1 Billion

Terminal weekend, Finding Dory became the 27th film to earn $i billion worldwide. In doing so, it created a lot of interesting tidbits worth talking virtually. Just beginning, the history of $one billion movies. More...
Weekend Estimates: Batman 5 Superman hits March tape $170 milion
March 27th, 2016
Batman and Superman not only had to fight each other this weekend, just also mediocre reviews. They accept come through in some style, nevertheless, posting a record for March of $170.i million, according to Warner Bros.' Sunday forenoon estimate. Our model has the film coming a little below that mark, at $165 million or so, which might mean information technology won't quite elevation Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II'southward $169 million, which is currently the studio's best ever weekend. Simply the fact that nosotros're comparing the picture show to the Harry Potter franchise is nothing but skilful news for them. More...
2015 Preview: November
November 1st, 2015
Oct has come to an stop and everyone should be happy nearly that. Except for The Martian, there were no serious hits that opened concluding month. At that place were more outright bombs than even midlevel hits. Fortunately, Oct of last year wasn't spectacular either, then 2015 maintains a healthy lead over 2014. Even more fortunately, November looks fantastic. In that location are four films that take the potential to earn $200 million or more than. The biggest of these is the final Hunger Games movie, which should achieve $400 million. Spectre has a existent shot at $300 1000000 and could be the biggest hit in the franchise. Meanwhile, nearly every November there'due south an animated kids moving-picture show that becomes a monster hit. This year, The Peanuts Movie and The Good Dinosaur are both aiming for that box office milestone. The last fourth dimension we didn't have a family unit film that earned at least $100 meg in Nov was 2011 and that's because there were iv family unit films that opened in the last ii weeks of the calendar month and that much competition meant they cannibalized each other. Both of these has a shot at $200 one thousand thousand and if neither of them reached $200 meg, I would be shocked. Meanwhile, last Nov was a skilful calendar month at the height with three monster hits: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part i, Big Hero six, and Interstellar. However, later on those three films, at that place were not much positive to talk about. It really looks like 2015 will match 2014 at the top, plus information technology could have better depth. I might be a little too optimistic, just I think November is going to be a great month at the box office. More...
International Box Office: Jurassic'due south Worldwide Success
June 18th, 2015
Jurassic Globe completed the trifecta over the weekend. Non just did the motion picture take the largest domestic debut, it broke the same record internationally and worldwide. The motion-picture show pulled in $315.61 million on xix,612 screens in 66 markets for a worldwide opening weekend of $524.42 million. Information technology broke the previous international and worldwide records that were held past Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II. It is also the start movie to open with more than $500 million worldwide and information technology is simply a matter of when, not if, it will top $1 billion globally. The only downside is the number of markets it has withal to open in, which is one. It debuts in Nihon in August and information technology might be the biggest global striking of the year before it even gets at that place. More than...
2014 Preview: November
October 31st, 2014
October was a better than expected month with the overall box office keeping pace with October of 2013, for the most function. (The last weekend will be terrible, simply that's because of Halloween.) We were able to close the gap somewhat in the yr-over-year comparison, at least by a trivial chip. So how will November do compared to Oct. Let's put information technology this way. There are only seven films opening wide this month. Of those, Across the Lights will likely non make an impact at the box role. Every other movie has at least a reasonable shot at $100 million. More than one-half the of the films opening this month could hit $200 meg. Leading the fashion will exist The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Function 1, which could hit $400 one thousand thousand. The only problem is when book franchises split the final installment into 2 parts, the start part tends to exist weaker at the box function. Interstellar is a large question mark. On the low end, it could make but over $100 meg, while on the high end, only over $300 million is within achieve. That's a wide range of expectations. On the downside, concluding Nov, at that place were two movies to accomplish $400 meg: Catching Fire and Frozen. On the other paw, there was just one other movie to make more than $100 million, Thor: The Nighttime World, so mayhap the depth this twelvemonth volition help 2014 come out ahead in the year-over-year comparison. Featured Blu-ray / DVD Review: Neighbors
September 22nd, 2014
This summer was terrible at the box office with no $250 million hits throughout the summer until Guardians of the Galaxy opened in Baronial. That said, there were a number of smaller movies that did quite well at the box part. Neighbors, for case, toll less than $20 million to brand, merely pulled in $150 million at the box office. Was it a hit considering of its quality? Or did it benefit from the weakness in the tentpole releases? More...
Analysis: Sandra Bullock is Hollywood'due south Top Actress
June 30th, 2014
With the contempo weak functioning of films such as Transcendence and Edge of Tomorrow at the box office, in that location's been a lot of talk recently nearly how much actors and actresses are really worth to a moving picture. The poor performance of these films hasn't come up as a huge surprise to followers of the Bankability Index, which produces valuations considerably below the $20 one thousand thousand that Johnny Depp reportedly earned from his lead office in Transcendence, and nosotros thought this is a proficient opportunity to look at what the Alphabetize says almost the most valuable actors and actresses in the business.
With Angelina Jolie making headlines for all the right reasons for her starring role in Maleficent, it seemed just fitting to kickoff with an assay of the most valuable actresses in Hollywood. For this chart, we've taken each star'southward worldwide Bankability Index and divided it by the number of films they make each year to become an estimate of the average value they bring to a movie, equally of June, 2014. Weekend Wrap-Up: Captain America Reaches Milestone, Transcendence Sinks
Apr 22nd, 2014
Captain America: The Winter Soldier won the weekend box function race with a amend than expected result and this helped information technology reach $200 million. Likewise, Heaven is for Existent was surprisingly strong earning second identify over the weekend, despite opening on Wednesday. Unfortunately, none of the other new releases lived up to expectations and the overall box office brutal 5% to $133 million. This was yet xx% higher than the aforementioned weekend last year, boosting 2014'south pb over 2013 to eight% at $2.92 billion to $2.70 billion. More than...
Weekend Predictions: Divergent Opinions on the New Releases
March 20th, 2014
Another calendar week, another pair of wide releases. That's becoming a mutual affair to say. It is besides a skilful thing to say, considering also many movies tend to hurt all films involved and it is much amend to have one big release and the counter-programing film. This calendar week the big release is Divergent, which the studio is hoping will be the start of a new franchise. The box office tracking for the film looks good, even if the reviews do non. The counter-programing this week is Muppets Most Wanted, which is also opening with a saturation level theater count and it looks to do likewise as The Muppets did. Last year in that location was also a strong one-2 punch with The Croods topping Olympus has Fallen $43.64 million to $30.37 one thousand thousand. I'one thousand not certain that Muppets Most Wanted will hold up its end of the bargain, just Divergent is poised for an opening of at least $50 meg. It looks likes 2014 will again win over 2013. DVD and Blu-ray Releases for February 25th, 2014
February 24th, 2014
It'southward a very impressive week at the top of the new DVD and Blu-ray releases. There'due south non one, but ii $200 meg hits coming out this week. Likewise, there are not i, but two major Awards Flavor hits coming out too. One film, Gravity, is in both groups. All three films, Gravity, Thor: The Dark World, and Nebraska, are all contenders for Option of the Calendar week. Gravity is the only i I didn't get a take chances to review, but the Blu-ray Combo Pack or the 3D Philharmonic Pack are clearly the Choice of the Week. Information technology's an amazing film and the Blu-ray releases are loaded with extras. More...
2014 Preview: February
January 31st, 2014
After a weak first, January rebounded and a couple of films on last month's preview croaky $100 one thousand thousand at the box part. Granted, Lone Survivor is technically a December release, but Ride Along will become one of the rare January releases to achieve the century mark. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be too many February releases that have a existent shot at $100 1000000. It is very likely that The Lego Flick will reach that milestone, but most of the residuum of the movies will be lucky if they reach $50 meg. Terminal February was very similar. We had one surprise $100 million hit, Identity Thief, plus a couple of solid midlevel hits, Warm Bodies, for instance. However, for the well-nigh part, the month was one miss after another. This means 2014 could continue its winning means, or at the very least, shouldn't fall behind 2013's pace. More...
Contest: Game of Take chances
Oct 25th, 2013
There are 3 wide releases, but but ii of them have any adventure of becoming more than than a midlevel hit. Costless Birds is a digitally blithe family motion-picture show that has a very timely release, but it is also a 2d-tier CG animated motion picture. Ender's Game is a $110 million movie based on a book aimed at immature adults. It is yet another picture show trying to tap into the vacuum left backside by Harry Potter. I don't think either of them volition exist big hits, but ane of them has to be the target picture show. I recall Complimentary Birds will accept improve legs, but that Ender'due south Game will have a better opening. As such, it is the target film for this calendar week's box office prediction contest. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office number for Ender's Game. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film'southward opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sun), regardless if they go over or not, will win a re-create of The Conjuring on Blu-ray Philharmonic Pack.

Height-grossing actors and actresses in leading roles
Over the past two or so years, nosotros've been working on ane of the biggest projects nosotros've always undertaken: building out our database of acting and technical credits to include complete information on every acting function and meaning technical credit for movies for which we have box role data. While piece of work on this vast task continues (and volition, of course, go along every bit long as films are being made), we have enough coverage of the industry now to showtime doing some serious analysis. Over the next month or 2, I'll be looking at some of the things we've constitute and we'll be rolling out new features at The Numbers that take advantage of the dataset. This week, I'll look into how we are categorizing acting roles, and discuss the first charts in our new People Records department. More...
Weekend Estimates: Homo of Steel Posts Biggest June Weekend
June 16th, 2013
2013 has been a nervous time for Warner Bros.. After six directly years every bit the number one or number two domestic distributor, the studio's main franchise breadwinners, Batman, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and The Hangover are all coming to an cease or already played out. They are running in third place for the year to date, and badly need a new money spinner if they are to avoid lean times in 2015 and beyond. This weekend they got their knight in shining armor, or, more accurately, Man of Steel. The reboot of the venerable Superman franchise volition open this weekend with $113.08 one thousand thousand, a new tape weekend in June and a huge shot in the arm for the studio. More than...
Blu-ray Sales: The Boilerplate Spider-Man
January 8th, 2013

This includes The Amazing Spider-Man, which earned first place with 641,000 units / $fourteen.37 one thousand thousand. Its opening calendar week Blu-ray share was 54%, which is impressive, but 1 has to presume the studio was hoping for more. And so again, the moving picture is more than than profitable plenty to ensure a sequel. More than...

New Moon will nigh likely remain the top opener for the franchise with $142.8 million, although it volition be a shut-run thing.
